Designer Fashion Trends: The Chanel Choice
As per usual, the Chanel collection for Fall 2008 featured a wide variety of styles that looked like they could be the next new fashion trends for just as wide a variety of people. With the clean, elegant lines and the restrained palette that was primarily black, white and gray, the first idea you’d get about the collection was that it’s fill of very ‘safe’ choices. Upon closer inspection, though, you’re bound to pick up some the messages and statements that Karl Lagerfeld left behind.
For example, Lagerfeld wanted to show that length need not be given up just because winter is on its way. Longer pieces like ankle-length skirts and dresses with trailing backs were done in such a way that they’d still be sensible for the colder weather.
On a more serious note, Lagerfeld also seems to be acknowledging the financial problems of today as well as the looming financial crisis. A good number of pieces can be described as borderline minimalist, without too many meticulous details or luxurious embellishments. The only extras worth mentioning weren’t even glamorous handbags or shoes, but simply spider weave details and knit layers.
The lack of extras is compensated by the sophisticated lines and the excellent tailoring, so every outfit still looks well put together, even if not luxurious. Lagerfeld’s designs will make you think that the recession is simply a time for more sensible new fashion trends. After all, who says you can’t be socially aware and chic at the same time? Chanel definitely isn’t.
